Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses literary life in the region of Haná (central Moravia) between the years 1938 and 1948, emphasising the natural dominance of the city of Olomouc as a centre for Catholic intellectuals. Just as in other cities, several tendencies can be observed in Olomouc. The previous development of a regional literature continued with such authors as Josef Koudelák and Josef Vaca, whose works were published by the Romuald Promberger publishing house. A tradition of literary realism pervaded the work of Stanislav Krejčí. Jan Čep, who lived in the village of Myslechovice during the war, collaborated with Olomouc‘s Dominicans – the conservative centre of Catholic cultural life. The period after 1945 is, however, distinctive not only for the continuation of previous regional tendencies, but also for an effort to overcome this somewhat narrow literary model (in the works of Jaromír John, Jan Čep, Oldřich Králík, Božena Mrštíková). After the communist putsch in February 1948, however, this Catholic intellectual life ceased to exist. In the difficult years that followed, some kind of continuity with its ideas was only preserved through certain activities at Olomouc University, since all other group or civic activities relating to Catholic ideas were banned.
