Summary/Abstract: The present article considers the twofold interpretation of the elementary structures of signification: the privative opposition relished by Roman Jakobson and the dichotomy of extensional and intentional definitions of meaning as established by Danish linguists. The poetic effects of the complex term are unfolded in the analysis of Marcelijus Martinaitis’s ballad “Many Kukutis and One”. Mythological narratives suggest the complex term as an intermediate term of the semantic category. By locating the Four Elements within the semiotic square, the present analysis of Jonas Juškaitis’s poem “Bosch” uncovers its semantic universe. At the end of the article, a conclusion is drawn that the complex term ultimately implies the triumph of the unpredictable reality over logical schematism.
