Summary/Abstract: The article presents the principai concepts of Algirdas Julius Greimas's narrative syntax. The canonical narrative schema is used to analyse the tale Apie tris brolius: du gudru, o vieną kvailą ("About Three Brothers: Two Witty and One Fool") from a collection by Jonas Basanavičius. The analysis of the tale Apie dailydę, perkūną bei velnią ("About Carpenter, Thunder, and Devil") highlights the mythical code which modifies the schema and discusses the actantial relationships of the actors and the polemic dimension of the narrative. Greimas's narrative model is supplemented with the typology of characters introduced by Jurij Lotman.
