EXILE AND THE SPECIAL PROBLEMS OF CONTACT AND CONFLICT WITHIN DIFFERENT CULTURES

Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with the phenomenon of exile and the special problems of contact and conflict within different cultures. The loss of native land and the process of searching for a  new bilingual and bicultural identity was especially difficult for writers. The work of Milan Kundera and Sylvie Richterová is analysed here as an example of the effort made not to yield to discontinuity and at the same time to preserve personal and artistic integrity. Kundera's narrative technique became gradually more universal, his metaphors and allusions referred to common European spiritual and cultural background. focuses on language and multicultural aspects, searching for personal identity and establishing a connection between two separated worlds, between the past and present.
