Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the development of the Czech historical novel in the 20th century. The most important trends became the deconstruction of traditional genres and the search for expression of ambiguity, uncertainty and existential questions. The destruction of false myths formed sometimes part of the protest against the poetics of socialist realism. This process is illustrated by the work of Vladimír Körner, Vladimír Macura and Jáchym Topol. Körner represents the catholic, Central European tradition and the poetics of literary existentialism. Macura’s never ending experiment with various forms and genres and his use of intertextuality are some of the typical features of postmodern art. Topol is part of the sceptical wave of world prose which is distinguished by its marked content and expressive originality. The grotesque effect of acutely intensifi ed absurdity is achieved by ostentatious satirization of the pseudo-rhetoric phrasing mechanism.
