Summary/Abstract: The French Nouveau roman was an important experiment which rejected the traditional novel and sought new ways of fictional exploration. Its representatives tried to give a new set of laws to the novel, which they regarded as the major genre. The paper deals with comparison between the French Nouveau roman and Karel Milota’s novel Sud (written in the 1970s, published 1993). In Milota’s novel, the traditional plot is replaced by a description of objects and scenes. The same elements of plot constantly reappear in different contexts, as in Robbe-Grillet’s Jalousie, where reality is not the movement of time but the rotation and combination of images. The events and objects are described from multiple and contradictory viewpoints. The narrator is no longer the interpreter of what has already been written, he is instead the agent of a work in progress.
