Summary/Abstract: The research is focused on the uniqueness of stylistic features employed by F. M. Dostoevsky in portrait description. The author gives his definition of the literary portrait, highlights its “volumetric” nature: the concept of the “portrait” contains a description of the hero’s appearance, characteristics of his behavior, psychological analysis of his condition (external intended to convey inside). The portrait implies inclusion of the hero into the object-spatial world of the work and plays an important role in the ideological and artistic structure of the novel. The major features of the artistic portrait drawn by Dostoevsky are its ultimate compactness, expressiveness, poly alternativeness, and psychology. The main content of the article is devoted to the study of the complex S. Z. Marmeladov’s portrait sketch in the interpretation by the modern Greek translator S. Patadzis. A method of linguistic and literary analysis of the text was used by the author to carry out the research. It was revealed that the translator takes the utmost care of the Russian writer’s text, transforms the minimum of the text, seeks how to preserve its syntactic structure, and brings in allowable additions and substitutions, which do not distort the meaning. It was concluded that the Greek translator preserved and transferred the nature of Dostoyevsky’s artistic method employed by him in portrait description.
