Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to the examination of the verbal portrait category as an element of the lexico-stylistic research. The study is based on the methods of descriptive, comparative, and contextual analysis of the relevant passage from Part 3, Chapter V of F. M. Dostoyevsky’s novel “Crime and Punishment”. The passage contains a detailed internal monologue of Rodion Raskolnikov in the translations of S. Patadzis, A. Alexandrou, Z. Kanas. The criticism of the passage is carried out with consideration of the polysystemic approach of R. van den Broeck. The purpose of the article is to identify and characterize the language markers of Raskolnikov’s speech utterances: the emotional-expressive syntax, the combination of conversational style vocabulary with neutral and high units, the use of expressive means (comparisons, epithets), and different morphological signs (pronouns, modal words, interjections). As a result, the translations are characterized with reference to the adequacy and equivalence of Raskolnikov’s “many-voiced” speech recapture. Conclusions are made on the varying degree of success of the Russian materials’ incarnation in Modern Greek.
