Technological cooperation of the European Union and the United States in the years 1980–2010

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to analyze the role of research and development alliances in reference to technological competitiveness and innovation policy. The analysis of the number of newly created R&D alliances in the period 1980–2010 shows that the higher number of technological alliances were undertaken particularly in cooperation between two groups of companies, above all from Europe and the USA. The results of the analysis show that mutual cooperation among companies has been increasing since 1970. The intensive multilateral cooperation can bring more benefits for involved partners than mutual rivalry. Moreover companies which invest more in specific alliance management tools have better results in alliance success rates.
