Summary/Abstract: April 13th, 2011 celebrates the anniversary of 149 years since the adoption in Romania of the first law regulating the rights of authors of literary and artistic works. In the first part of the study the author makes a short introduction to writing and manuscript book, as well as to the first typographies and prints on the current territory of Romania (period until the emergence of the United Principalities in 1859). The second part lays out the main provisions of the Press Act of April 13th, 1862, enactment signed subsequently to the Union of the Romanian Principalities on January 24th, 1859, which also included provisions on the rights of authors of literary and artistic works. Moreover, the author reviews the articles of this law and, demonstratively, brings forward a series of resolutions passed by Romanian and foreign courts of law of the time. As portrayed by Constantin Hamangiu, the Law adopted on April 13th, 1862 stood for “a great and important step in securing and observing as stronger and more complete as possible the copyright of Romanian and foreign writers and artists, on their work, and constituted one of the most comprehensive and modern regulation in this field, relevant for that particular time”.
