Socio-economic development of European Union economies in the light of taxonomic analysis

Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the results of research on socio-economic development of twenty seven EU economies. The research was undertaken for the year 2010 with the application of Z. Hellwig’s measure of taxonomic development. Thirteen variables were used for the analysis. The set of variables included: natural growth, infant mortality, real GDP growth rate, GDP per capita according to PPP, inflation rate, rate of employment, unemployment rate, share of service sector in employment as well as in GDP creation, exports per capita, public finance deficit/surplus in relation to GDP, public debt in relation to GDP, share of tertiary education graduates in population aged 30-34. Central Statistical Office data were used for the analysis. The research proved the existence of considerable disparities in the development among the European Union member economies.
