Fiscal policy and economic crisis in selected European Union countries

Summary/Abstract: The chapter analyses relations between economic crisis, budget deficit, public debt and fiscal policy. The research problem has been formulated as follows: high level of public debt does not allow to use expansionary fiscal policy for counteracting economic crisis. The theoretical part of the chapter presents characteristics of changes in condition of public finance in times of economic crisis and possibilities of fiscal policy at that time. The practical part of the chapter is based on the method of statistical analysis. Statistical analysis embraces changes in: economic growth, budget deficit and public debt in selected European Union countries. Statistical data show that economic crisis in the European Union co-exists with the high level of public debt, which confines possibilities of using expansionary fiscal policy.
