THE ROLE OF SPECIALIZED TRANSLATION IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING

Summary/Abstract: The educational use of translation among second language teaching methods has always aroused controversy. The current guidelines for second language teaching all have in common the elimination of translation. However, we should recognize the usefulness of translation in specialized language teaching. Since our students won’t become professional translators, the educational use of translation should not be as widespread as it once was. The important thing is that students understand and transfer in the foreign language the meaning of the phrase. Therefore, the student should basically be able to transmit the message in a coherent and intelligible way.
