Summary/Abstract: In the first part of this paper we tried to define and make a short history of the concept of the ¨new standard¨ Italian language. In the past standard language was considered the equivalent of written literary language. However, contemporary linguists notice a tendency towards ¨restandardisation¨. Elements and constructions considered outside the norm in the past are nowadays accepted as ¨standard¨, which led to the concept of a ¨new standard¨. In the second part we make a list of morphosyntactic and lexical features of the ¨new standard¨ Italian language. The general morphosyntactic trends are the simplification and removal of irregularities and a preference for analytical constructions. The lexical revolution is defined by loan words and loan translations from English and newly coined words.
