Summary/Abstract: In the current economic reality, the success of a given area is determined by its potential. Innovation becomes much more often indicated as one of the main sources of this success. The paper presents the main measures related to the assessment of the innovation potential of the European regions with an indication of the changes that have occurred there recently. Despite the illusory stability in this area, some regions are clearly investing in growth potential, and other are slowing down after reaching a high level of development. The study suggests that it is impossible to show evidence of more visible effects of these actions in the short term due to the long-term nature of the studied issues. Only a long-term, properly oriented, coordinated and consistent policy can improve the innovative situation of individual regions.
