Summary/Abstract: The article refers to the results of research on spatial variation in the level and structure of financing research and development activities in Europe. It takes into account both the sources of funding and sectors that determined the use of individual measures. The comparison analysis on the interstate and interregional basis at the national and EU level shows − taking into account the results in the form of patent activity − the potential of each area. Statistical and econometric methods in the field of spatial econometrics are used as a research tool. In spite of common assumption of the key role of financing in the innovation shaping, other conditions suggested in the study are also needed for its performance. Therefore, the inference of innovative potential based on the level of expenditure on the R&D should be treated as over-interpretation.
