Summary/Abstract: The research issue of this article is the hypothetical inter-dependence between the entrepreneurship index and economic and social development of a commune as well as tourism development therein. The hypothesis was verified on the basis of the analysis of statistical data from 348 rural communes with the application of Pearson’s coefficient and Hellwig’s method of standardized sums. It was found that there is a high statistical inter-dependence between the entrepreneurship index and economic and social development of a commune (r = +0.72) as well as between the entrepreneurship index and the tourism development in a commune (r = +0.7). Therefore, it was concluded that entrepreneurship may be defined as the stimulus of tourism development in rural areas.
