The role of local government in implementing sustainable development

Summary/Abstract: The article presents the role of local government as the main creator of the sustainable development processes on a local scale. To achieve the objective of the article the author has made the analysis of the literature of the part of wider research covering the effects of the use of EU funds for sustainable development of rural areas in the region. The study has shown that the activity of local government can contribute significantly to the growth of social welfare of the local government units. However, still there are visible gaps in education on the concept of sustainable development.
