Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to present the problem of unemployment and social division in the region as well as to draw attention to the possibility of reducing this problem by widely comprehended social economy, and thus to provide a better implementation of sustainable development. The article presents the assumptions of the concept of sustainable development, and the relationship between this concept and the social economy. In the article, the social economy is presented as complementary to the concept of sustainable development. Their common ground is the quality of life and social well-being, as well as some of the principles on which they are based. In addition, the article discusses the problem of unemployment and presents the level of unemployment in Zachodniopomorskie (West Pomeranian) Voivodeship on the basis of the latest data. The social economy is presented as a tool for an effective reduction of unemployment and social exclusion and thus a tool for the practical implementation of the concept of sustainable development, particularly in the social aspect.
