An Image of Multiculturalism in Vojvodina: Language as a Condition for Communication

Summary/Abstract: The paper presents summarized results of a part of the research entitled “Sociological Aspects of Multiculturalism and Regionalization and Their Influence on the Development of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina and the Republic of Serbia.” The fact that Vojvodina represents a distinctly multicultural region necessitated further research of the following two questions: Do the inhabitants of Vojvodina speak some of the minority languages (apart from their native languages)? Should the people belonging to the majority nation learn a minority language, if they live in the surroundings where the respective minority constitutes the majority? The research data points to the conclusion that there is an unstable social basis for sustainable multiculturalism.
