Summary/Abstract: The introduction of this paper determines the significance of political education in the creation and preservation of a democratic political order. The strategies of democratization demand various formal and informal, spontaneous and planned stages of political education, provided by different agents of socialization such as family, the media, school; participants in political education: syndicates, political parties, organizations of civil society; and finally, planned education by a national program of democratic education including the educational plan of the school subject Civil Education. Further on, the experiences of several countries in democratic education of citizens are analysed. Along with the so called 'low intensity' democracies, such as South Africa and Pakistan, the subjects of the analysis are also consolidated Western democracies such as France, United Kingdom and others. In the end, the paper determines the place of Serbia in the global process of the recognition of the need for planned education of citizens in a democratic society.
