Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the problem of social inequalities in European countries. In the first part the main definitional currents and research directions of this phenomenon are presented. The second part covers the analysis of social inequalities based on four indicators: Ginniego coefficient, quintile share ratio, indicators of the wage gap and the rate of poverty (60% of median income). The basis for the analysis were the Eurostat figures. The obtained operating results have confirmed the large social inequalities occurring between European countries. The analysis allowed to distinguish three groups of countries. The first group includes Norway, Iceland, the Netherlands, Sweden and the Czech Republic. In these countries the level of non-equality and poverty rate are significantly below average. The second group includes countries where the level of inequality fluctuates around the European average: Lithuania, Austria, Germany, Hungary, Luxembourg and Poland . The highest level of inequality among European countries is characterized by Bulgaria, Romania, Greece, Spain and Portugal.
