Summary/Abstract: The paper elaborates on the problem of income inequality in Poland and the European Union. The first part discusses the main trends and directions of research definition of this phenomenon. The second part consisted of an analysis of income inequality based on the three indices – Gini coefficient, income quintile share ratio and the poverty rate (60% of median income). The results confirmed a decrease in income inequalities in Poland Three groups of EU countries. The first includes Finland, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Slovakia and Slovenia – in these countries had the lowest levels of inequality. The second group consists of countries where the level of inequality oscillates around the European average – Luxembourg, Poland, United Kingdom, France and the Netherlands. The highest level of inequality was characterized by Romania, Bulgaria, Latvia, Lithuania and Greece.
