The New Rural Stratification in Bulgaria. The Perspective of Rural Households

Summary/Abstract: Should the current rural stratification in Bulgaria be grasped, the newly emerging inter-household hierarchy of inequality must be paid special attention to. Village individuals have always been dependent on relations of kinship. The current economic situation, though, has made the tie yet stronger. Hence the increasingly closer link between rural household's economic situation and villager's own social status. Transmutations in the hierarchy of rural households are studied on the basis of a comprehensive data-base. A typology of Bulgarian rural households in terms of relations of inequality is proposed. It's the successful, stabilized, problematic and impoverished rural households that are singled out in terms of the newly emerged inequality hierarchy.
