Problems and conditions of municipal waste management in Silesian Voivodeship

Summary/Abstract: In the Silesia region due to the large urbanized and industrialized areas there are numerous environmental problems. One of the key development priorities of Silesian Voivodeship is the increase of the environmental protection effectiveness especially due to the disposal of waste. Unfortunately, progress in this field is still insufficient. This study focuses on the assessment of waste management in Silesian Voivodeship municipalities. For this purpose, the available statistical data, strategic documents and conducted in 2012 survey on the development of the environmental goods and services in Silesian Voivodeship (including the state of waste management) have been used. Based on the above data, it can be said that the most important challenges facing the voivodeship due to the introduction of the new waste management system, include: changes in waste disposal methods, building of lacking infrastructure (in particular, the construction of incinerators for the Silesian agglomeration area), ecological education and system organization at the municipal level (especially definition of criteria and the amount of fees charged to residents and the choice of contractor waste collection services).
