Summary/Abstract: Presenting the role of prisoners of war in medieval Balkan societies is a challenging task. In order to place a correct picture of the past we must overcome somewhat amorphous nature of that topic. It is clear that issues on the captives’ life during the middle ages have created a variety of themes and problems which can be further elaborated. The full-scale estimation of their medieval extent might never be realised. But modern day scientists are not completely helpless due to the new look over the available historical database and the general knowledge of medieval past. Even at the present level of preliminary remarks highly important characteristics of captives’ fate can be distinguished.
