Summary/Abstract: The paper discuss the librarians lifelong learning in the context of the information and knowledge-based society, and the new roles and tasks of librarians as information professionals. The emphasis is on continuous acquisition of new competencies related to the organization of knowledge and knowledge management in order to keep abreast with time, especially pedagogical competencies required for the implementation of information literacy programs. Information specialists / librarians during their work should acquire pedagogical knowledge through alternative non-traditional forms of professional development in pedagogy, teaching and learning, learning theory, teaching adults, theories and strategies of evaluation and assessment, and the application of the observation model.
