Summary/Abstract: The author deals with the international position of Montenegro throughout history, and particularly from the aspect of the relation of great powers towards small countries. He takes wider global relations, preferred by great powers, and partial, particular and specific relations, insisted on by small countries as his starting point. Precisely due to a different approach to the same problem that the both have, the author seeks more to open interesting questions in this portrayal of the complex relations, than provide answers to them. Such approach is also a methodological innovation which we do not encounter in the existing literature dealing with the same issue. For instance, he looks into the extent to which historical experience of the past years, and even centuries, is contained in the criteria of current foreign policy, and whether the adopted solutions reflect or annul the years and centuries of tradition of those relations. Finally, he explores the motives behind the twists in foreign policies of small countries, if there were any throughout history. He concludes that a dialogue between science and politics is mutually beneficial. History cannot be changed, but it can be interpreted in a better way
