Territorial cohesion as the basis for the regional policy

Summary/Abstract: The object of this paper is the attempt of the specification of the regional and local government actions with the participation of the state to improve the territorial cohesion. The content of this article is based on the problems of Eastern Poland and more precisely on the basis of the least urbanized Lublin Voivodeship. Due to the low level of urbanization of all voivodeships of this part of the country, the article emphasizes the need for the polycentric development of the settlement and the economic activity based on the network of cities. In this respect there are indicated the tasks of voivodeship and local self-government bodies as well as the difficulty in their implementation. A particular challenge for the cohesion policy is the development of the territorial marketing raising the attractiveness of the large, medium and small cities and whole regions. The final element of the article is determining the significance of the territorial cohesion in achieving other priority regional policy objectives.
