Summary/Abstract: In the nineteenth century, as a result of the industrial revolution, the successive waves of industrialization and the development of capitalist economic policies of many countries were substantially altered. The first half of the century was dominated by protectionism, in the middle of the century the policy of free trade was popular, and in the seventies protectionism returned.The author presents the economic foundations of the idea of free trade, the development of economic thought, examines the impact of international trade on economic development of capitalist states. Presenting the stages of the development of trade in the nineteenth century, using various statistical data the author tries to explain the benefits and costs arising from free trade, considering the economic arguments for protectionist policies.
