Summary/Abstract: This paper explores the stages of development of world trade in the nineteenth century and shows the benefits and costs of free trade and infant industry policies. The infant industry argument is an example for protectionism and has been used by many countries in the world at an early stage of economic development, including the UK, USA, France,Prussia. The work has been used numerous statistics on trade, tariffs, and often conflicting views of economists as Adam Smith (classical economics) and Friedrich List (Historical school of economics).
