Summary/Abstract: The concept of social economy was first used by R. Fogel in the sixties of the twentieth century. The thesis of R. Fogel and A. Fishlow was groundbreaking in the environment of economic historians, contributing to the development paradigm of a New Economic History. In this paper the author calculates social savings of railways for Germany for 1909. He relates the result to social savings available in literature and concerning other countries of the world.
