Summary/Abstract: The development of small and medium-sized enterprises is influenced by widely understood cooperation with external partners through which these entities: (i) gain access to inaccessible resources, new competencies and skills, (ii) together with partners make investments in new resources unavailable to independently operating entities, (iii) undertake and implement large projects (iv) and exchange knowledge. The paper aims to identify stimulants of and barriers to cooperation of small and medium-sized enterprises with external entities. In order to achieve this objective, a survey was done using the CATI method on the sample of 148 small and medium-sized companies. The research results have confirmed that cooperation between small and medium-sized enterprises of the analysed regions has a wide character, i.e. it included, in addition to typical business contracts, the exchange of knowledge as well as different kinds of projects and services (outsourcing the creation of expert opinions, analyses and studies).
