Summary/Abstract: The paper focuses on the stylistic devices used for the verbal variant of reprocher in Exercices de style by Raymond Queneau. Our endeavour is to divide the material by language levels. For each level we shall provide a classification of the language facts in question. Raymond Queneau resorts systematically to the division of French into as many language variants as possible. One can distinguish several language levels, according to the following criteria: the socio-cultural level, the message content and the linguistic structures. We have explored these language levels in R. Queneau’s Exercices de style, which is regarded as a unique work consisting of 99 writing exercises devised so as to retell the same episode while variating the means of expression. Being endowed with great verbal invention skills, Queneau plays with the words, disregards the grammatical forms and handles all language levels with ease. The Exercises illustrate several parameters associated with the specialized language levels and registers used to account for the same story, namely: language levels and registers, paraphrase, periphrasis, the rhetoric of metasememes and synonyms. In this study we intend to minutely describe the verbal variation of reprocher (as it occurs) at the main language levels.
