Summary/Abstract: The author treats the Cyrillo-Methodian tradition in Czech literature in the broader sense of a cultural legacy, the appearance of which was formed by those literary monuments which preserved the historical memory about the Thessalonian brothers during the centuries. From that point of view, the epoch of Czech Baroque appears to be not a period of a breaking of this tradition, but rather a new stage in its development. Having in mind the variety of interpretations of their legacy – from the concept of Cyril and Method as predecessors of Czech Protestantism (Stránský, Komenský) to their representation as the Apostles of the Catholic faith (in official homiletic and hagiographic works) as well as the role which their defense of the rights of Slavic languages played in the formulation of the notions of Slavic consensus and of the dignity of the Czech language (Balbin) – that period could be approached as one of the most variegated and contradictory in the development of Cyrillo-Methodian traditions, a period which does not have any analogue neither in Czech cultural history, nor in the history of other Slavic nations.
