Summary/Abstract: A follower of the German philosopher Johannes Rehmke, Dimitri Michaltschew (1880–1967) was the most influential pre-WWII Bulgarian philosopher. The article is devoted to his concept of being (actuality, reality). According to Michaltschew, a real thing is that which acts and is acted upon, so that things are divided into two types: existent and nonexistent. The nonexistent are those that do not have being in themselves but rather exist insofar as they are given to the subject. Michaltschew is inconsistent as regards the issue of whether the qualifications of “existent“ and “nonexistent” are applicable to psychic experiences. The major weakness of his view about reality, however, concerns the theory of truth, for he failed in his attempt to explain the concept of existence.
