Summary/Abstract: The problem discussed in this article is whether there is a substantial similarity between the different meanings given to the term of „philosophy“ today and what it amounts to. Part One is aimed at illustrating the ways and the reasons for the occurrence of the different uses of the term. Part Two offers three possible solutions: 1) There is a substantial similarity between the different concepts of philosophy 2) There is no logical connection between them 3) The different concepts of philosophy are in a family resemblance relationship. A reportive definition of „philosophy“ is possible in the first case, a stipulative definition is possible in the second case and in the third case the identification is genetically analogous to the concept of S. Kripke of the so called natural phenomena. In Part Three the three possibilities are illustrated by the views of D. Mihalchev, K. Popper, W. Dilthey and W. Wundt. The main conclusion is that the genetic approach to the problem is the most plausible one.
