The Controversy of the Sea Cult along the Ionian Coast

Summary/Abstract: The object of this study is the controversy of the cult of sea in the Ionian Coast. This cult is presented with its two opposite sides, life–giving and life-taking. So, according to primordial human perception, it was necessary to make oblations and sacrifices. The purpose of the study is researching, recording and studying the mythical material re-garding to the cult of sea. In this study, there is argued the existence of the Sea with dual function: as a deity, and as an altar of worshiping and praying. For these reasons, Proto-Albanians should have known and have set up the cult of the divinity of the sea, which in some form, it turns personalized in the sanctity of St. Spyridon. The subject flattened in this study begins with the threading of deification of the sea, which provides arguments for the existence of a specific designation of the divinity of the sea even in the Coast. It continues with the rites dedicated to the cult of sea, with its basic function as the protector of seafarers. This cult is connected with the cult of live-stock and prosperity as well. Human of the early stages by identifying the phenomena of nature and of the world around with the practical or material life. There is attempted to explain the creation of siphon, the storm coming from the sea, which was considered as an act of expressing the anger of the sea deity over mortals. In addition, here, the sea is evidenced as a settlement of different mythical beings with attributes of monsters that caused harm to humans (there are mentioned Himera, Lubia etc.), but there could live also positive mythical beings whom we encounter in the ter-restrial mythology. Among them there are: sea voices, The Beauty from Sea etc. Finally, the controversy of the Sea Cult, has determined also the lifestyle and spiritual practice of people close to him.
