Summary/Abstract: The present paper reviews A. E. Hernandez’ book, The Bilingual Brain, OUP, 2013, a referential and seminal original research on how language is represented in the brain and how two or more languages are stored and represented neurologically. Bilingualism and multilingualism are dominant realities of human society and statistical data confirm that it is rather the norm than the exception in most societies, while monolingualism remains to represent a minority of the world population. A founding concept of the book is the dynamic aspect of language processing. Efficiency, adaptability and synchronization show that the representation of bilingualism in the brain should be considered within a more general framework. This system is built up over time and interacts with other processes and functions. A true and most amazing achievement of the human species, bilingualism and its representation in the brain are fascinating but only just emerging in this research field.
