Summary/Abstract: A fundamental element of spatial analyses is to determine the structure of spatial proximity. It enables to estimate the influence of adjacent regions on the examined processes in a particular region. A weight matrix measures spatial relationships or observation proximity, and it can also represent itself by the interactions among the centers. The construction of a matrix of spatial weights results from the assumption on the interactions among examined regions. Most weight matrixes are based on the distances between regions, which match the distances between their geographically determined centers. The article also presents other ways of outlining regions’ “centers” (for example on the level of voivodeships, the center of a region can be a capital of voivodeship or a district representing the biggest volume of examined variables).
