Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on the alternative care in Poland. According to the Supreme Audit Office (NIK) in 2012–2014 the number of families from which children were taken and put in alternative care versus all families that do not fulfil their protective and educational functions was 4.5 percent. The author claims that the children brought up in dysfunctional families and in alternative care are the weakest social group in Poland and improving their situation should become an important goal in family policy. She surveys the reasons for putting children in alternative care and describes the weaknesses in current Polish system of support to dysfunctional families.
