Summary/Abstract: The article analyses several codices of canon law, the earliest of which can be dated to the 14th century, and the provisions they make regarding punishment for various crimes. As a name for the type of manuscript analysed the designation of “codex of canon law” or “compilation of canon law” is proposed instead of “epitimiac nomocanon” since the latter does not encompass all the various kinds of punishment mentioned in the manuscripts. The material from the two oldest manuscripts corroborates hypotheses regarding the system of civil law used during the second Bulgarian kingdom.
