Summary/Abstract: The operation of the privileged areas over the world is a subject of frequent scientific discussion, including the effectiveness of incentives and their role in the national economies. In the light of the available empirical evidence, the role of the SEZs most often restricts to, inter alia, facilitating export promotion, openness of the economy, attraction of foreign investments and improvement of labour market situation. The aim of the article is to analyze selected aspects of SEZs operation in Poland in the field of foreign trade. In particular, the volume of trade turnover and factors determining its contribution are discussed. The share of exports and imports in domestic trade turnover in 2012 amounted respectively to 20 and 16%. The value of this contribution, and a positive trade balance in SEZs as well as the branch structure of exports and imports permits positive assesment of SEZs’ contribution in the domestic trade turnover.
