Summary/Abstract: This paper discusses the subordinate clause introduced by the French conjunctive phrase “sans que”. Depending on the context, this clause may carry a concessive or consequential value, which is why this sentence type is classified in grammar as a circumstantial or adverbial clause. The focus of this paper is on the syntactic analysis of “sans que”, with the aim of determining syntactic idiosyncrasies based on all twenty five of its occurrences in Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables.
