Summary/Abstract: Political transformation influenced the principles of free market economy to run a initiative and increase more qualified new generation. On the other hand, the economic changes caused degradation of the social groups that did not and still are not able to meet the challenges of the past and present. These groups include beneficiaries of social assistance who are able to get by due to the fact that they receive the aid from the state. The aim of the present study is to analyze and evaluate the work of social welfare institutions and their managers who are responsible for solving key social problems. Therefore management of the institution depends on the proper use of skills of their highly qualified social workers who are changing the life situation of people in need. The study takes into consideration many managerial dysfunctions exemplified by a conflict situation of a social welfare institution in the city of Łódź that has been developing for years. The presented picture points to many mistakes of social and economic nature made by the managers. The study used the method of content analysis of the thematic literature, as well as sociological methods, which also includes a technique of participant observation.
