Summary/Abstract: The article is a lexical and textual analysis of the oldest life of St John of Rila. Parts of the text are directly taken from Слово о исходе доуши by Abba Makarius, included in some of the transcripts of Zlatostrui. There are also some textual similarities berween the Popular life and the Old Bulgarian texts translated from Greek. The comparison with the vocabulary of the classical Old Bulgarian Canon allows the conclusion that the Popular life of St John of Rila is a product of an anonymous Old Bulgarian writer of the 10th century and is a result of compilation, blended with personal creative work.
