Summary/Abstract: Increased access to education and globalisation of education means a varied addressability of programmes and courses which, with a large target audience, but often ever limited resources, have put extra care into building an effectiveness component in all activities and outcomes. How people learn is a component of any effective teaching methodology or approach to course design. The study of learning, today a science of learning, supplies educators with evidence-based principles which can lead to immediate decisions on what activities to include at every stage of the teaching and learning process and what view to take on content delivery. One such approach is flipped learning which changes the roles played in the classroom by the teacher and her students. In English language learning, flipping the classroom, while not always called like that, has been practiced for some time, beginning with the advent of communicative approaches. The present paper reviews the principles of good learning in relation with the flipped learning model in ESP, pointing out advantages over the traditional face-to-face classroom as well as challenges for teachers who have taken up this model or would like to.
