Summary/Abstract: Every year worldwide, over one million people decide to commit suicide. Widespread media coverage of suicide cases may trigger copycat suicide effect; however, a responsible and sensitive coverage of such cases may encourage vulnerable people to seek help. Recommendations included in ethical guidelines advise on avoiding sensationalism in coverage, avoiding placing this kind of information on the front page of newspapers, deleting any detailed information on the method of suicide, and avoiding details about the place where the suicide occurred. A responsible coverage of suicide cases involves emphasizing the positive aspects of life, presenting alternatives to suicide or solutions for those with suicidal thoughts, covering this issue in other contexts, not just when such events happened, and may contribute to the reduction of suicide.
