Summary/Abstract: Congregation for Propagation of the Faith (Sacra Congregatio de Propaganda Fide) was founded by Pope Gregory XV in 1622. After that the Catholic Church intensifies its attempts to influence the Balkans and particularly Bulgaria. In the XVII century the primary catholic center is Chiprovtsi and its vicinity, where opened schools and training was conducted in “Illyrian” language. The literature, created by Bulgarian Catholic writers in the XVII century – Petar Bogdan Bakshev, Philip Stanislavov, Petar Parchevich and others, strongly differs linguistically by Paulician literature (literature of Bulgarian Catholics in modern language) emerged a century later, in the vicinity of Plovdiv, and which is defined as a separate stage of Catholic literature in Bulgaria. Paulicians, who are concentrated around two main centers – Plovdiv and Nikopol, were the main strategic goal of the Catholic missionaries. The article will examine the prerequisites for the emergence of Paulician literature (literature of Bulgarian Catholics in modern language).
