Summary/Abstract: Shopping centers have become an integral part of the structure of modern large and medium-sized cities in Poland. In Katowice, there are two such complexes, located in the heart of downtown. Both are multi-purpose, they contribute to the activation of economic downtown area (which is proven by numerous new restaurants as well as service and trade companies) and trade function draining from downtown streets. In the conditions of market competition shopping centres compete with shopping streets for every potential customer, often winning this competition. Cooperation and collaboration at this stage of their operation is not present, although it seems to be one of the most optimal solutions.
